Luke's Names

Luke

Contrary to popular assumption among those who know Jason, Luke is named after Saint Luke the Apostle. On Easter Sunday 2006, Megan and Jason were in Church, and the Gospel reading was from Luke. Megan and Jason had been discussing baby names, and Megan realized she really liked “Luke.” She leaned over to Jason and said, “What about ‘Luke’ for a boy’s name?”

Not surprisingly, Jason quickly agreed to the name. Apart from his respect for St. Luke and his writing style, Jason was excited at the prospect of being able to say, “I am your father,” over and over and over again.

Megan and Jason did not settle on Luke’s middle name until their last day in the hospital, although they had previously narrowed it down to Arden, Alexander, or Augustine. After meeting Luke, Megan started leaning toward Arden. Unlike Alexander (the Great) and Augustine (the Saint), Arden had the advantage of being inspired by an actual person in Megan and Jason’s lives: Christopher Arden Knepp.

Jason had worked with Chris at the law firm of Vinson & Elkins. Over the years, Chris had become a personal, professional, and spiritual mentor to Jason. In fact, apart from Megan, Chris was the only other person present with Jason at Jason’s baptism, and as time went on, Chris and his family became wonderful friends to both Jason and Megan.

When Chris learned Megan was pregnant, he loaned Jason the t-shirt he had worn when both of his daughters (Alexis and Catherine) were born. The t-shirt reads, “It takes a little more to make a Champion,” and Jason wore it proudly in the delivery room.

When Luke was born, Chris, Charlotte (his wife), and Catherine were the only non-family members in the waiting room. (Alexis was sick and did not want to risk giving it to Luke.) As a result, Megan and Jason found themselves repeatedly explaining to family members who Chris and his family were. As they recounted all the Knepps had done for them and for others, they realized Chris’s middle name was the perfect “middle-namesake” for Luke. (Megan and Jason later learned that Arden is the maiden surname of Shakespeare’s mother, an arts community in Delaware, and the name of Joss Whedon’s son. According to some sources, Arden originally meant “Valley of Eagles.”)
